The First Inventory course was slower than I expected, but in a way that was useful rather than frustrating. We spent the first session just listing everything — accounts, standing orders, the lot. By week three I had a clearer picture of my own money than I had managed in the previous twenty years. The written summaries helped a great deal.

I took the statements course mainly because I had never properly read my EPF statement. There is a lot on there that I simply did not understand. The session on EPF was the most useful for me — Azlan went through it section by section, and by the end I knew what each figure represented. Worth the price for that session alone, honestly.

I was sceptical at first — I had attended financial talks before that turned into sales pitches about thirty minutes in. This was nothing like that. No one tried to sell me anything, in any of the six sessions. The pace suited me. I am not a fast learner with financial matters, and the facilitator never made me feel that I was asking too many questions.

I enrolled in the retirement programme at 52, which felt perhaps a little late. Noraini was clear that there is still a great deal to organise and consider even at this point, and the six months gave me a much more structured view of what the next decade needs to look like. The written closing summary alone was worth keeping — I refer back to it regularly.

The insurance statement session was something I did not know I needed. I had three policies I could not have explained if asked — I was just paying the premiums each month. After that session I knew what each policy covered, what it did not cover, and which one I should probably review. A practical course, not a theoretical one.

I took the First Inventory course expecting it to be a bit dry. It was dry, in fact — but in the way that careful work is dry. We were not there to be entertained. By the end I had a proper written record of every account I hold, every recurring outflow, and every insurance commitment. I could not have told you those numbers off the top of my head before.

Participant Journeys

Three accounts in more detail.

Starting Point

Halimah, 47, had been paying into three investment-linked insurance policies for over a decade. She had received the statements each year but never understood what they were saying. Her primary concern was whether she was adequately covered — she genuinely did not know.

What Happened

She took the six-week statements course. The session covering insurance policy schedules gave her a clear method for reading each document. She left that session with a list of questions to put to her insurance provider — questions she had never known to ask before.

What Followed

Within a month of the course, she reviewed all three policies with her insurer and found one that had a premium she could redirect. She described the outcome as "finally feeling like I was managing things rather than just paying bills." The course did not make the decision — she did.

Starting Point

David, 53, was ten years from his planned retirement and had never sat down with anyone to look at what that would actually mean financially. He had an EPF balance, some ASB, and a rental property. He had not looked at how those pieces worked together.

What Happened

He enrolled in the six-month retirement engagement programme. Over the six months, he and his facilitator worked through his EPF account, reviewed his insurance coverage, and considered a realistic picture of his monthly outgoings in retirement — including healthcare costs he had not thought to include.

What Followed

He received a written closing summary at the end. He described it as the first time he had seen his retirement situation written out in full, and said it made him feel "less like I was walking into the dark." No investment products were recommended — the work was entirely educational.
